Bantam B's win big in return to Semiahmoo
Wednesday, May 29, 2002.
The Bantam B squad returned to White Rock with a new gameplan and it paid off big.
The team played what was likely their best game of the season and came away with
a 9-5 victory.
The new plan called for more passing, more hustle, and a determined effort to win possession
of loose balls. Semiahmoo scored quickly as the game opened, but our guys responded
immediately with a quick goal, and then proceeded to fill the net again and again and again.
The win comes at a good time as the guys are about to head into a tournament weekend, and
they struggled through some of the tiering games.
Chris Shinkle had a great night, scoring a number of times, and Justin Engelbrecht
was outstanding in goal for the Bantam B Mustangs.
What was confusing again was the refereeing at the Semiahmoo rink, as a number of penalties
were called against the home squad, but Chilliwack went through the entire game at even strength.
Bantam B's defeated in lopsided Semiahmoo outing
Tuesday, May 21, 2002.
Our Bantam B Mustangs had a tough night against the stronger Semiahmoo team, losing
by a score of 2-11. It's hard to say what the score might have been had our boys been
allowed to play even-strength a little more often. The scoresheet will show a very
lop-sided number of penalties assessed in the game, with a steady stream of Green jerseys
headed to the box.
In one stoppage of play, a Semiahmoo player was ejected from the game for throwing some
wild punches at the Chilliwack goaltender. Unsubstantiated reports have it that this player
is facing two 3 game suspensions (6 games) for his actions. Chilliwack's goalie was assessed
a two minute minor for his part in the fracas, and when Chilliwack's Eric Gray ran
towards the large Semi player that was pummelling his smaller Chilliwack teammate, Eric was
also assessed a two minute penalty for being the 'third man in'. The problem with this call
is that Eric didn't get within 6 feet of the scrap, being pulled aside by a referee before
he actually got "in".
Question for the referee: How do you know that Eric wasn't simply going to get between
the two players & assist you with breaking up the one-sided fight?
The calls that were made in this situation resulted in a two man advantage for Semiahmoo.
There's something wrong with that scenario.
Note to the Commissioner:
It was reported long after the game had thankfully ended that one of the referees was heard to
say to the other "my brother scored". This was after a Semiahmoo goal.
I wouldn't want to be a referee. It's a tough job, and no matter what you do,
somebody feels that you're wrong. I realize that the refs are often young and sometimes
inexperienced. This being said, it's important that referees are perceived
to be impartial with their calls. If mistakes are going to be made (and they will be), they
should be made in calls going against both teams. You can't have all the mistakes happening
against only the visiting team. It creates tension.
Midget B in Ridge Meadows tournament.
May 16 - 18, 2002
Chilliwack's Midget B squad entered the Ridge Meadows tournament with a bang on Thursday night,
handily defeating the Langley team with a score of 5-1. Nursing a shutout until the late moments
of the game, goaltender Brad Thompson played an amazing game, putting on a goaltending clinic,
and allowing only a single ball to get past him. Brad was chosen as Chilliwack's MVP
for the game as he backstopped a hot Chilliwack team.
Friday night's action saw Chilliwack go down to defeat in a 4-11 loss to the home Ridge Meadows
squad. The Chilliwack team was assessed a great number of penalties, allowing a number of
powerplay goals for the home team. Visiting fans questioned the eyesight of the referees, as
the home team was rarely penalized, despite some quite visible offences. Two goals and
a strong game earned Chilliwack's Matt Ash the MVP award for this game.
On Saturday morning, a tired squad of Chilliwack Midgets were back on the floor versus
Port Coquitlam. Chilliwack was rudely awakened as the Poco team quickly scored 4 unanswered
goals early in the first period. Having shaken off the cobwebs, the Mustangs returned to
form and played a strong game from that point forward... allowing only 2 more goals to match
the 2 that our boys scored.
Final result: 2-6 in Poco's favor, with Justin Anderton
taking home the MVP honors for his morning's work.
Midgets throw a scare into New Westminster.
Sunday, May 12, 2002
Regarded as one of the top teams in the Midget 'B' division, the New Westminster squad
were very nearly defeated at home by our inexperienced Midget B Mustangs.
Our 12 first year Midgets (including 8 that are playing Lacrosse for the first time this year),
played an impressive game on the wooden floor in New Westminster.
Controlling a large
part of the game, and backstopped by Brad Thompson's strong goaltending, the Mustangs
were led by rookie Justin Anderton's 4 goal performance in what might have been
a wild upset victory. New West scored in the dying minutes of the game, breaking a tie to
pull away with a 4-5 win.
After the game, the New West coach stated that Chilliwack "might
be their only real competition this year".
